Pipi Te Hei was the son of Haki Tangira who along with his uncle Whakaruku Tangira and cousin Tutu Duncan Tangira all served with the Battalion (Monty Soutar, Nga Tama Toa - The Price of Citizenship: C Company 28 (Maori) Battalion 1939-1945, David Bateman, Auckland, 2008: 336).
Haki was killed the day after Tutu Duncan Tangira, also in Italy.
