Notes:

From the Battalion's June 1944 diary: "Received message from CCS that Capt Ornberg, OC B Coy, had died of wounds he had received on the 28May 44, he was rushed to a head specialist at Naples but failed to respond to treatment. Battalion thus loses a very capable and most popular Officer." - Archives New Zealand – Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga

This article appeared in the Evening Post, Volume CXXXVII, Issue 136, 10 June 1944, Page 5DEATH FROM WOUNDS CAPTAIN ORNBERG Captain Peter Fredrick te Heuheu Ornberg, aged 24, is reported as having died of wounds in Italy. He was educated at the Martinborough High School and at Nelson College, and afterwards studied for his Law Degree at Victoria University College. His work before the war lay in the Native Department in Wellington. At the time of his death, Captain Ornberg was leading the Arawa section of the Maori Battalion into battle, having taken over from Major Sorenson, who is on furlough. A greatgrandson of the paramount chieftain of the Arawa, who gave the National Park to the people of New Zealand, Captain Ornberg was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Ornberg, of Raumati Beach, Paraparaumu. His eldest brother, 2nd Lieutenant W. L. McRae, and his youngest brother, Gunner Marshall Ornberg, are both serving with the Forces. Captain Orhberg's three years in the Army were served in the Maori Battalion, in which he rose from the ranks, and he was mentioned in dispatches on April 11, 1944. Click here to view the article.
