Sonny Sewell

Sonny Sewell in 2007.

Sonny Sewell also known as Rangitepuru Waretini from Tuhourangi and Ngati Wahiao.  He was a 39'er and served with B Company.  Sonny was a runner for Captain Rangi Royal during the bayonet charge at 42nd Street on Crete.  He was 17 at the time.  This action along with those at Maleme airfield added to the reputation of the Maori Battalion.

In 2004 Sonny received a Queen's Service Medal.  He had a long involvement with iwi and community development.
