Private Tono Brown

Tonotu Paraone SN16/1432, 4th Maori Contingent, NZ Maori Pioneer Battalion was awarded the Military Medal in September 1917.

"Tono Brown Kawiti, who won the Military Medal during the recent fighting in France, is a descendant of a line of warriors. He is the great grandson on both sides of the old warrior, Kawiti of Ruapekapeka Pa fame; the name Brown being added when Sir Gore Brown was Governor of New Zelaand. He joined the Expeditionary Forces early in 1916. His home is at Waiomio, near Kawakawa."
