Prior to the launch of Monty Soutar's C Company history Nga Tama Toa: The Price of Citizenship in Gisborne on 25 October 2008, several thousand people re-enacted the return of the Māori Battalion's C Company in 1946, when the troops marched from the city's railway station to Te Poho-o-Rāwiri Marae.
The
parade was arranged in order of rohe, beginning with the people from
Ngāi Tai (Tōrere) and Whānau-ā-Apanui, followed by Ngāti Porou and the tribes of Tūranga,
and culminating with the Ngāi Tāmanuhiri of Muriwai. Many of those marching carried photographs of their tīpuna who served in the 28th Māori Battalion.
