Monty speaking at Whakarewarewa..

Field marshall sir Bernard Law Montgomery at Whakarewarewa,Rotorua,Edward Hayward holding flag. His two predecessors in General Wavell and particularly Field Marshall Claude Auchinleck undoubtably had left Field marshall Rommel's Afrika Korps in a diminished and tired state with exceptionally low supplies, hardly to improve much with Mediterreanean allied naval and air power beginning to show its metal.Sadly Prime Minister Winston Churchill's impetuous nature and his tendency to attempt "remote control" of the Eighth Mid Eastern Army, including the Dominion's forces, led to the standing down of General Auchinleck, who given the same resources from September 1942 would have deservable enjoyed the spoils as did Montgomery.
