Tūhoe leader Sir John Te Ahikaiata Turei stands to the right of the microphone (holding a piece of paper). He enlisted in 1939 but because of his leadership capabilities was kept in New Zealand.  He eventually served overseas in 1944 leaving with the 13th Reinforcements.
