Charlie Shelford

Charlie Shelford went into camp with the Main Body and was assigned to Headquarters Company.  He was arrested in late April in Palmerston North for assault and sentenced to three-month in prison. After his release he was transferred to Papakura and completed training with the Fourth Maori Reinforcements whom he embarked with for overseas duty in Npovember 1941. In Egypt he was posted to D Company where he won the DCM. He then served with Headquarters Company before finally rejoining his tribal unit C Company in Italy.

Charlie had whakapapa connections to Ngāti Porou and Te Whakatōhea through his mother.  His Te Arawa whakapapa came through his father. He also had links with Ngāti Ruanui of Taranaki and Nga Puhi through his paternal grandmother, Iritana Shelford, and with Ngāti Tupaea, Ngāti Tanewai and Te Whānau-a-Apanui.
