28th Māori Battalion waharoa

A close-up of the 28th Māori Battalion waharoa at Anzac Park, Nelson stands in honour of those men of the Māori Battalion from the Nelson region.  Plaques on the waharoa feature the names of these men.  See the names here.

It was carved by carver Mark Davis.  The carving design features tanks, aeroplanes and the gods Rongo-mā-Tāne (god of peace) and Tūmatauenga (god of war) are represented.  It also features sheep and cows, recognising that many of the soldiers worked on the land when they returned.
