My family and I have lived in Auckland for nearly 30 years. I was born and raised in Omahu, Hawke’s Bay, by my parents, Herewini Matetahuna Tiopira (born February 26, 1920, in Omahu) and Eva Te Owai (Joey) Reedy (born May 20, 1924, in Ruatorea).

Our father, Herewini Tiopira, had a cousin, Joe (Kenneth Renata) Broughton. Uncle Joe was born on August 11, 1919, in Napier, Hawke’s Bay, and passed away in 2000 in Auckland. He was cremated, and I took his ashes to the Omahu Urupā, where my brothers and sisters know his resting spot. Currently, Uncle Joe is beside Mum (Eva Joey Te Owai Matthews) in an unmarked plot at the Omahu Urupā. He passed away at 81 years old. Dad and uncle were in the 28 Maori Battalion. AND there are many stories that we can all tell of the many ANZAC day celebrations.

Uncle Joe and Auntie Margaret (Margaret Dorice Broughton) lived in Panmure, Auckland. I believe Auntie Margaret passed away 25 May 2009 or 2011 I need to confirm this with Deborah Smith, who is possibly in Auckland. We also knew their son John Broughton fairly well, but he was a Ships Captain and he was away often. I understand that he passed overseas, but I’d like to find out exactly where, as I’m not certain.

Our aunt and uncle often visited Hawke’s Bay to see Mum and Dad. Although they came to Havelock North where we lived at the time, they never stayed with us; they always spent time with our Mum and Dad or stayed at their house in Napier. Or slept in their van nearby.

I’m now searching for Uncle Joe and Auntie Margaret’s daughters. If anyone can help with information, please reach out to me.
