Joseph A. Berghan is listed in the N.Z.E.F. Casualties report of The Evening Post 22 February 1944. Click here to view full page. Family records on the Andrija Kleskovich and Erina Kaaka Whanau website have William Joseph Andrew Berghan born 16 June 1920, whose mother is Annie May Berghan (nee Anderson) from Awanui. He is my father's first cousin. Annie May and my grandfather Joseph are siblings. - Te Awhi.

Kia ora,I've made a list of Awanui soldiers, have 13 total. I'm trying to identify an unknown Awanui soldier who is in a photo with my Grandfather, Charlie Hayward; Awanui. Joseph Andrew Berghan was one of them. I'm using a process of elimination, and have got it down to 7 possibilities, and I thought I'd start with Berghan, because the man in the question, though obviously part Maori - is very fair. Would there be anyone in your Whanau that could identify Joseph Andrew Berghan ? at the very least consider a family likeness. Ever hopeful. The link to the photo is below. The man in question is seated on the right.http://www.28maoribattalion.org.nz/photo/private-charlie-hayward-and-comrade
