A hangi in Italy, 1944

Māori Battalion troops prepare a hangi at Isernia, central Italy, in 1944, shortly after their withdrawal from Cassino. At back: Charlie Shelford of Tikitiki and Tom Poki of Whāngārā. Front: Joe Maurirere of Tolaga Bay and Pat Raroa of Tikitiki. The photograph was taken by the Battalion's long-serving medical officer, Captain Campbell D'Arcy.

My grandfather Pat Raroa died in Feb 1944 so either the date of this photo is wrong or this photo is not Pat Raroa. I am guessing the date of the photo is incorrect as they did they Pat was a stocky person and always had a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
