Uncle Charlie passed away back in 1990, bit of a frail old chap, but I spent a wee bit of time with him on and off early to mid 80s. When he was still fit and able. Through our whakapapa we shared a very special place that were the kai manu`s of Hinekuha on Taukihepa. Or for you fellas up north, titi on the muttonbird islands. All pretty basic back in the day so a lot of time spent sitting round listening to stories from Uncle Charlie, lots of life stories about what he had done through the years and also stories of the 28th Maori Battalion. And the thing I remember of those stories was the fondness and love he had for the men he fought with, his friends that had die and the family they had become.

I remember uncle Charlie with fond memories.  He was an amazing piano player.  He learned how to play the piano when he was in the army and could play anything by ear.  A gentle man who was greatly loved
