Kelly Hawira was my koro. I never knew that he served in the 28th Maori Battalion next to Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu.. Its interesting to know that, because I never really knew my koro, which is quite sad. I also never knew my kuia because she died when my mother was only 3 years old. One of my greatest and deepest wishes, is that I wish I knew my grandparents, and that I could have spent time with them. To listen and learn through their knowledge and experience. And share their stories with my children one day. I wish I could have shared that bond that only a koro and kuia have with their grandchildren. I wish I knew my grandparents... Naku Noa, Anahera-Aroha Hawira

Kelly Hawira was my koro and Hekenui Hawira (Heke) was my dad. I too wish I had learned alot more about his life experiences while he was still here with us. I on the otherhand, do have some wonderful memories visiting as a child and will never forget. I miss both him and my father dearly and am so proud of them both. Kia tau te rangimarie, Natasha Awhina Hawira.
