Better known as Hōri Mahue Ngata, he was the grandson of Sir Apirana Ngata and was later the main compiler of the H.M. Ngata English–Maori Dictionary, first published in 1993, four years after his death. His wife, Mihihara, whom he married in March 1940, was the younger sister of Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu.
