This is Uncle Sam Kereopa who, along with his friends and whanaunga, joined the 28th Maori Battalion to fight in World War 2. Like many he put his age up to get accepted, got wounded and came home to find that while he was fighting overseas, the NZ government had destroyed his village and meeting house at Te Kopua, Whaingaroa Raglan. He regretted not being home to protect his parents and others dispossessed at that time.
