Kani Rangitauira, Laurie Rae (immediate left) and their mate at Kaingaroa in 1963.
Kani received a Military Medal for single-handedly taking 18 German soldiers prisoner in Italy towards the end of the Second World War.
Kani Rangi Park in Murupara is named in his honour.
