James Boyd

James Boyd who served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade.

James was killed in action on October 1st, 1916. He is remembered on the New Zealand memorial at the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery in Longueval, Somme, France.

James was the youngest of four surviving children of settler James Milne Boyd and Ruihi (Lucy) Nohotai, of the Bay of Islands. Through his mother, he was of the Ngati Torehina and Ngati Rehia hapu of Ngapuhi. Before enlisting to serve in WWI, James was engaged in the whaling industry with the Cook family of Russell. Initially listed as missing in action after the Battle of the Somme, a military inquiry subsequently ruled that James had been killed in action. He appears on both the Kaeo and Waimate North war memorials honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.Tarewa Rota
