Private Panoho evacuates wounded at Casa Le Morte

This citation for Wynyard Panoho's Military Medal is reproduced from the April 1990 NZ 28 Maori Battalion Golden Jubilee Reunion booklet:

812614 Private Wynyard Panoho M.M.

During the attack on CASA LE MORTE on the night 14/15 Dec, 1944, two of the attacking Coys on right of Battalion sector suffered heavy casualties. Under enemy shelling Pte PANOHO who as a stretcher bearer began to evacuate the wounded, often times crossing minefields in order to reach the forward aid post about eight hundred to one thousand yards from farthest casualties. Throughout the night he worked, sometimes with help of others but mostly on his own, giving first aid and carrying wounded back. Without thought for his own safety, he maintained his work under enemy spandau fire even after first light during which time the enemy had already begun a counterattack on the forward right-hand Coy. Undoubtedly, Pte PANOHO's work in this action saved the lives of several members of his unit and throughout the day and during the whole of the Battalion's action for the next two days, he showed outstanding devotion to duty.
