Private Ngapo's outstanding courage as a linesman

This citation for J.M. Ngapo's Military Medal is reproduced from the April 1992 NZ 28 Maori Battalion Reunion booklet:

62677 PRIVATE JAMES MAAKA NGAPO M.M.

On the morning 4 August 44, during the attack on Balbani, Private Ngapo showed outstanding courage and determination in his duties as linesman. With complete disregard for his own personal safety he followed closely behind the attacking Coy's, until they reached their objectives, laying the lines under intense mortar and shell fire. On several occasions throughout the day and following night, these lines were out in a number of places by enemy shelling, but Pte Ngapo continued to patrol and repair the lines under constant fire. Pte Ngapo's outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty helped in no small measure the success of the operation, and he was personally responsible for maintaining vital communications during this difficult and dangerous period.
