Cpl Alfred Sparks is buried in Martinborough cemetery. We had the honour of restoring his grave as part of our volunteering work with the NZ Remembrance Army. Lest we forget

I knew Alfred Sparks as uncle Alf, it was through his brother Thomas who married my Great grandmother Edith. My memories are limited but they are fond. I remember Uncle Alf used to play his bugle often, and that he was awarded the King George Cross (it has since had a name change) for bravery. I unfortunately have no knowledge of what happened to the medal. He was unfortunately killed in a fishing accident off the Wairarapa Coast. The name i am using is the knickname Great Granddad Sparks and Uncle Alf used to call me,,,,Trees are green as my middle name is Teresa..............Lest we forget
