A soldiers’ memorial exists on Tau Henare Marae, Pipiwai, Northland. Is a marble obelisk surmounted by a carving of an angel, and is inscribed with the names of the following local men who died on active service during the Second World War: Privates Mokena M. Waa, J. Hoterene, Mohi Hone, Haupai Whatarau, Te Reheu M. Pirihi, Moses Kaka, J. Davis and Rihari Tohu, Lance Corporal Hirini R. Heke, and Sergeant Waihora Paora Kira.

Thanks for that information. Joe is a great uncle of mine. Just ddoing some light reading g in lockdown and very sad to read he only lasted 2 days during the battle of Crete and never made it home. I pray he was taken quickly and buried with dignity. Moe mai taku tupuna.
