70 years ago this month

For most of June the Battalion are at Arce, north-west of Cassino. CO Lt-Col Young is keeping them occupied and out of mischief. The American’s have occupied Rome. Read the war diary for June 1944 here.

Was born 7 June 1914. He was the son of Ngahuka Tungia Kohe and Pirihira Ruruku. he enlisted on the 26 January 1940. He was 26. He served in New Zealand 26 Jan 1940 to 30 April 1940, overseas 1 May 1940 to 12 July 1943, back in New Zealand 13 July1943 to 4 December 1943. He was discharged 14 December 1943. He was entitled to the following medals.1939-45 Star, Africa Star, 8th Army Clasp, Defence Medal, 1939-45 War Medal and NZ War Service MedalHe was known to me as Uncle Gundy. He married Pukohu Alma Kawharu and they had 6 sons, Ngahuka, Rangiriri, Wiremu, Matiaha, Raymond and Ora Neil

this is awesome to read stuff about my grand father. as you can see matiaha was handed down to my father and then passed down to me.unfortunately i never got to meet my grandad but am very proud of him and am priveledged to carry the name matia. thank you for sharing this information.
