Tena koe Melissa. I wish to add to your comments regarding Hone John Pine Mau. My name is Katie nee Rakete, Hone is my mums brother, and I am in the process of submitting a photo of our dad, TeAni Naera Dan Rakete, who is uncles brother-in-law. Dad was with A.Com 28th Maori Battalion. I will also submitt a photo I have of uncle Hone Pine Mau. I would also like to share this story about uncle which our mum related to us. A letter had arrived to karani Kariti (uncles mother) stating that Hone John Pine Mau was missing in action, believed dead. Our karani Kariti went to visit our tupuna/tohunga, Rei Kauwere and upon her arrival (which he ''saw'' her coming) she showed him her letter. He told karani Kariti, your son is not dead, and he will return home. Shortly after that visit, another letter arrived from the war office stating, Your son Hone John Pine Mau is a prisoner of war... I am proud of both uncle and dad for their service during the 2nd World War. Nga mihi aroha kia koe , harikoa ki te kite tetahi o koutou e tautoko ana i tenei kaupapa whakahirahira. Kia ora...

I am searching for the name/family of a soldier who was a great friend of my great grandfather Hone Pine Mau - I believe my great grandfather helped him swim to safety as he couldnt swim. I have heard that this soldier has since passed but I was just hoping that we would be able to connect thru here....still trying to remember his name....
