Thank you Debbie for making contact and I am so happy to realise that this photo will at last be rightly shared with your family. I was 8 yrs when the war finished and he returned home. I remember there was a special school assembly called, and we were all told that the war had finished, so we were then given the rest of of day off. So, as children, we more excited with the day off. Debbie my family are very thrilled to know that this photo has now been identified. As children they have always asked who is this man. My husband Johnson Bristow and I live in Feilding, he is ex Navy an Operation Grapple veteran. However, I will ring you soon and hopefully we can make a special visit to Hamilton. Goodight Debbie and Albert God Bless.

Hi KathleenMy name is Jane Matthews (Pakinga) and am the youngest daughter of Albert Pakinga. I was only 7 when our dad passed away and I remember that day so clearly.Debbie my sister inlaw showed us this photo and it bought tears to my eyes, he was a kind and caring man and provided well for all our extended family of 10/11.I have been liasing with Leanne Tamaki in regards to getting a copy of this photo to put on my wall next to my late mother. As I have a photo of our mum when she was 17 years just before her and dad got married. I have spoken to some of my family and we have not seen this photo, must of been taken as such an early age. Is there anyway I can get a copy? I will pay for any expenses. It would be a great present for all my family for christmas.I would be so appreciated for your assistance with this request.RegardsJane Matthews (Pakinga)

Tena Koutou e te whanau, I am Thelma Hema Paterson (nee) Mckinney I am Alberts 1st cousin my mother Hema and Alberts mother Dolly were sisters, it was with interest that I came apon this sight to see that Alberts enlistment address was 83 Kupe Street Orakei Auckland this was my whanau home. The home of my parents Hugh and Hema McKinney (nee) Pakinga. Our home was used alot by whanau moving between Whirinaki in the Hokianga and Paeroa. Albert was not the only one to leave from this address my 1st cousin Phillip (Darkie) Pakinga also enlisted from 83 Kupe Street when he joined the Navy.I have many memories of Albert, my mother loved him and I think it would be fair to say she spoilt him. I remember going to his home in Tauranga with my mother for holidays. The McKinney whanau have a solid tradition in the armed force's my father Hugh Mckinney fought in the 2nd World War, my brother Joe Wynyard fought in the Korean War. My brother John Mckinney joined the army and his son Mark Mckinney has had a full career in the Army here and oversea's. We are now into our 4th generation with John McKinney's mokopuna Teina McKinney in the army.
