John (Waati) Tamakehu served in the 28th Maori Battalion during the Second World War from 23 July 1942 to 10 March 1946. He enlisted at age 18 years in 1942 and was not posted overseas until he turned 20 years in 1944. From 29 June 1944 to 23 January 1946 he served in the Italian campaign.
