My Father-in-Law Thomas Maaka Hohapata served with the 28th from Oct 1944 until the wars end. Before he passed away, he visited me and his moko's and sat and talked for hours. Really unusual for him. He spoke of his difficult life growing up without parents and with his sister his only family. Surviving the influenza epidemic and the depression. Lowering his age from 45 to 39 to be eligible to join the 28th in the hope that he would in turn be able to get low interest loans to develop his farm. I was honoured when I found that he hadn't shared that information with anyone before. I feel a responsibility to research and record as much of his life as I can for our children and moko's.
