I am the youngest son of Lt Dan Urlich. I am fascinated by the 28th Battalion and what fierce soldiers they were. The fact that these young men from mainly simple rural backgrounds had no hesitation to go to the other side of the world and risk their lives for King and country is both heroic and tragic. The Maori as a people lost so many future leaders. But they certainly helped to win the war. Dan was injured in '41 and returned home minus a leg. He died of a heart attack 20 years later when I was only 3 but I have heard nothing but good things about my father. I am now 61 and live in Auckland with 2 sons of my own (11 and 15).
