About Me
I am interested in the Maori Battalion, because my father Private Robert McLean was a member. He left with the second echelon and like many men of his time returned and rarely spoke of his time overseas. It was not until 5 years before he died at the age of 84 in 2004. It was a his 80th birthday when one of his former commanders presented our whanau with his citation for the MM. We didn't know it existed until then and realised he had received this just before the end of the war. He still refused to speak about it more inclined to refer to his cousins and friends around him.
