My dad was one of the many Ngapuhi men who never came home. I had the most wonderful childhood with my paternal grandparents and we lived accross the road from another relative, Sidney Neilson, who died in the same battle and is buried beside my dad. I have just been putting together information about my dad for one of my Grandsons. Dad came home 4 hours after he died and told my mother's mother who inturn told my mum he would not be returning. One day I will have a yarn with Dad, I can't say I have missed him as I didnt know what there was to miss, he was always close by and often spoken of and my Pop was the best role model I could wish for. Because of the way thing were, my aunts and uncles became my older brothers and sisters. Dad's horse Creamy lived to a ripe old age and as a child I rode many miles on her back.
