William Heperi is my uncle, he lived in Woodville after returning from the war, it was only years later when i started researching my whakapapa on my mother side, did i really get to know my uncle. His real name is Heperi Paraone Hohepa Poutawa, he changed his name to William Heperi after fleeing from his father and not wanting to be found...i have a photo of uncle Bill in his army uniform, my mother Maungarongo gave this photo and told me uncle was only young when he signed up...of course he like many of our tupana, war was exciting...he never liked to talk about his experience, but many of those in his company were closely related to him. he had no issues,
however when he married auntie Janet (nee Selby), he gained a family, who he brought up.
Tom Selby one of the eldest of Auntie Janets children, at uncles funeral, he spoke fondly of Uncle Bill and his years growing up...Uncle was baptised in a little church in Otaki, his baptism and birth certificate are held in the archive books.
