Wirina was born in Bellblock, Taranaki on 17 June 1881. He was working as labourer at Griffiths Bros in Nelson, when he enlisted in November 1916.

After two months at Sling Camp, England, Wirina joining the Māori (Pioneer) Battalion in September 1917. He was admitted to hospital several times in December 1917 with asthma. Eventually he was discharged as unable to serve due to his asthma.

Wirina died 21 April 1935. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Wakapuaka Cemetery in Nelson. Work was done in 2023 to install a serviceman's headstone.
