Takrouna Village in Tunisia in 1943 and 2011

Takrouna is a historic form of Berber village.  In April 1943 it had been completely desserted but it was vital to the Axis Forces to direct its artillery fire with its commanding view of surrounding countryside. It was eventually taken by New Zealanders many of them Maori, but with great loss of life. Only 3 families live on the top now and are dependent on the tourist trade.
