General Welcomes Our First Echelon At Port Tewfik

12th of February 1940, General Freyberg VC welcomes the First Echelon (including the 28th Maori battalion) of the 2 NZEF to Port Tewfik, Egypt with Middle East C.O. General Wavell (with cane) behind him and to his left are UK under secretary Mr Anthony Eden and Egypt UK ambassador Sir Miles Campson.

How "Tiny" as he was affectionally known among his division fought to keep the 2 NZEF together as a fighting unit and not let "higher powers" break us up which they most certainly tried to do,  he mostly succeeded.

A universally respected and loved leader whom New Zealand was most fortunate to have his leadership services from during the Second World War.
