I'm Maehe Maniapoto and I would like to post the following for my stepfather.
Lance Corporal Serial No: 802305
25 August 1913 – 12 February 1989
Te Tuahu was commonly known as Spider. He married my mother Kahupikake Maniapoto on 20 April 1950 at the Mission House at Whakarewarewa on 20 April 1950. The minister officiating was Wi Te Tau Huata also a returned serviceman. My father had died 6 years earlier when I, Maehe, was 4 years old and my sister Honoria, 2 years old. Te Tuahu became our stepfather and restored the balance in our family.
He trained as a carpenter under returned servicemen rehabilitation scheme at the training centre at Whittaker Road, Koutu. His training notebook, shows that he was a meticulous and diligent trainee. He worked as carpenter but later returned to forest related work, this time on the administrative side at the Waipa Sawmill.
We lived for a number of years in Whakarewarewa before Te Tuahu and my mother built a home on Reeve Road, Owhata, Rotorua. After my sister and I had left home to follow our individual paths, they took in a whangai from our whanau, Horiana, to live with them.
Te Tuahu passed away in Rotorua on 12 February 1989 and his tangi was held in Wahiao, Whakarewarewa. He now rests with his tupuna on their ancestral island Motutawa on Rotokakahi (The Green Lake). He is remembered fondly as a good father.
