Lt-Col Eruera Te Whiti Love

Lieutenant-Colonel Edward (Eruera) Te Whiti Rongomai Love, photographed during his time as commander of the 28th (Māori) Battalion, between May and July 1942. 'Tiwi' Love was the first Māori formally appointed to command the Battalion, although he had earlier taken temporary command in November-December 1941 when Lt-Col Dittmer was wounded. Lt-Col Love was mortally wounded near Ruweisat Ridge, Egypt, on 11 July 1942, and died the following day. He was 37 years old.
