Cassino after the bombing

An aerial view of Cassino township after Allied bombing in March 1944. As one Māori Battalion soldier wrote, 'At present not one wall of a single house is standing, just a mass of ruins'. Although many of the German defenders were killed in the bombing, those that remained were deeply dug in among the ruins.
