Takupu (1)

My son Craig and I have just returned from a tour of WW1 Battle sites where the NZ Division played its part in the Great War. One of the cemeteries we visited was at Polygon Wood. Many of the graves were those of the British Commonwealth, Australians, British and New Zealanders. There was one grave that stood out from the rest for us, a fallen hero of the Maori Pioneer Battalion L/Cpl Hori Takoko.

Polygon Wood cemetery also has a memorial building which is inscribed with the names of those of our soldiers who fell in the battles in this region who have no known graves.

Along side the cemetery is Polygon Wood forest. Although there was a reference to trenches inside the forest we saw none but we did come across two "Baby Elephants" constructed by the New Zealanders to shelter from German artillery bombardmen.
