The following article was found on page 15 of the Sun newspaper, 1 January 1916:What is regarded as a genuine '''message in a bottle" was recently discovered on the beach near Titahi Bay by Mr Thomas Barton, of Brooklyn (Wellington). The bottle, which was securely corked, was found among the seaweed and beach refuse, and the following message, legibly written, was found inside: —"To the finder of this note: Please correspond with 16/854, Bugler H. Wehipeihana, A Company, Second Maori Contingent, G.F.0., Wellington. We are just 18 hours out from Wellington. We left there at 10 o'clock last night, Sunday, 18th September. We are going to God knows where on the ship, H.M. N.Z.T. No. 29, Waitemata."
