This citation for Rangi Hoani's Military Medal is reproduced from the April 1992 NZ 28 Maori Battalion Reunion booklet:
67517 PRIVATE RANGI HOANI M.M.
On the night of 17 February 44, during the attack on CASSINO station Pte Hoani showed outstanding courage and devotion to duty. Early in the attack he personally liquidated a machine gun post, rushing in and killing three enemy gunners at short range with is TSMG. Later in the attack he killed two more enemy rifle men at close range. After the company has consolidated its position Pte Hoani risked his life under heavy machine gun fire carrying messages from his platoon commander to Coy HQ. He displayed outstanding dash and determination and was at all times an inspiration to the remainder of his platoon.
