Ohinemutu 1943: Hymn, Piko nei te matenga

The Anglican hymn Piko nei te matenga was often sung by members of the Battalion along with Au E Ihu.  It is sung here at the opening of the centennial house Tama te Kapua at Ohinemutu, Rotorua in 1943. Reinforcements to the Māori Battalion which had been trained at Ōhaewai and other places in the North Auckland area was strongly represented at the opening ceremony.

Announcement:  Wha tekau o nga himene, “Piko nei te matenga tau mai ko te pouri nui, e te Tama a te Atua tenei arohaina mai.”  Wha tekau o nga himene [verse 3 of the last verse].  Ko nga piki tuatahi, tuarua tuatoru me te whakamutunga.  Ko nga piki tuatahi, tuarua tuatoru me te whakamutunga.

Bishop:  This is a Maori hymn of lament.

Piko nei te matenga
Tau mai ko te pouri nui
E te Tama a te Atua
Tenei arohaina mai.

Ngaro nei o matou hoa
Riro atu ki te po
Tangihia i muri nei
Tenei arohaina mai

Tena koe kua taunga noa
Ki nga mate o te ao
Nou te mate tino nui
Tenei arohaina mai.

Whakapikau ana koe
I nga hara o te ao
Nau katoa i whakaea
Tenei arohaina mai.

Bishop: I runga i te ingoa o te Matua, o te Tama, o te Wairua tapu, Amine

this was one of my Gammas fav hymns - and it was sung at her tangi May 2016 - and i was very moved and will always remember it
